Summer is around the corner, and that means pests are too. Protecting your home from pests looking for a new home starts with knowing what species and signs to keep an eye out for. These are some common pests you may find in your home during the summer months.

Ants

Ants are a common issue that everyone deals with. Ants can come into a home the easiest. They’re a much bigger issue once summer is in full swing. Be sure to check your pantry and places that children frequent with their food.

Remember: If a child can fit in it, they will sit in it. Check your children’s favorite spots for leftover food. They could be attracting ants. You might be surprised by the number of ant species there are, and any one of them can descend on your home.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are common during the summertime because of spring cleaning. Unlike other common household pests, bed bugs are brought into the home. Think of them as nature’s hitchhikers. They’ll burrow themselves into clothing, backpacks, purses and the like. You might unknowingly bring bed bugs home from the gym or work. Or, they could travel from school to home in your kids’ backpacks.

Termites

Perhaps the trickiest pest to discover is termites. Termites eat their way through wooden structures. Termites are capable of weakening your home’s framework to the point of destruction. If you’re not vigilant about it, by the time you recognize the signs, it might already be too late. If you suspect that you have a termite infestation, first check your floorboards for what looks like heaps of sawdust, as this is what termite droppings look like.

As summertime nears, it’s important to be on the lookout for and protect your property against common (and less common) household pests.
